SPORTS What we offer

Athletics is offered during the cooler months of the third term.

Our Junior Primary learners participate in the Junior Primary Athletics Day. Each learner participates in different races. We also have a few novelty races to make it more enjoyable for both the learners and supporters.

Senior Primary Athletics heats and trials take place during school for every learner to participate. Once this has been completed, practices take place in the afternoon. We offer long distance, sprints and relays for the track events and long jump, high jump and shot putt for the field events.

The School team is then selected from the Inter House Athletics Day. Our best athletes go on to represent our school at the Inter School Event

Amanzimtoti Primary offers Cross-Country as a winter extra-mural sport to the Senior Primary learners. It helps to build and maintain fitness levels.

We host our Inter-House Cross-Country meeting at school. All learners are encouraged to participate and score valuable points for their Houses.

The Cross-Country team is selected from the House results. The top 6 runners from each age group take part in Fun Runs and Inter – Schools during the course of the term.

In the Foundation phase, boys are encouraged to play Mini-Cricket. These boys and some girls play in mini matches at Hutchinson Park on a Saturday morning.

Once boys have developed their skills playing Mini-Cricket, they are introduced to hardball cricket in the under 9 – age group

Both boys and girls play Hockey at Amanzimtoti Primary.

Our Grade 1 -3 learners are introduced to Mini-Hockey. This is a 6 a side game on a small field. There are Saturday tournaments that all the players have the opportunity to participate in.

Our Senior Primary learners practice twice a week.

Teams ranging from U9 to U13 are entered into local league and play in at least one tournament.

Our Mini-Netball introduces the game of Netball. The girls are taught Netball skills and introduced to the different positions. The emphasis is on skills development and enjoyment.

U/7, U/8 and U/9

Our Senior Primary learners practice twice a week. Teams ranging from U9 to U13 are entered into local league and play in at least one round robin in the term.

Our sport coaches provide the boys with all the necessary skills, to be able to achieve at the highest level of participation on the rugby field.

Our Grade 1 and 2 boys are introduced to rugby from the get go. Once the boys are more confident they start playing matches towards the end of the season. The under 9 rugby teams play uncontested scrums and lineouts.

Under 10, 11 and Senior Rugby is played on a full field with 15 man teams.

Grade 1 and 2 learners have an opportunity to attend Learn to Swim lessons twice a week as an extra – curricular.

u9 Junior Swimming is offered to the experienced swimmers in Term 1 as an extra-mural. Every learner is taught to swim during their PE lessons.

The Senior Primary participates in an Inter–House Gala. From this, our School swimming squad is chosen. The squad is required to attend early morning swimming training as well as afternoon training.

We attend two Fun Relay Galas against the local schools, the Annual Inter-School Gala as well as the DnD league which is swam at Kings Park Swimming Pool.

Mini-Tennis is offered to learners in Grade 1 – Grade 3. Learners are taught the basic skills of tennis. Teachers coach tennis and the school provide rackets and balls. There is one Mini-Tennis Tournament in Term 1.

Amanzimtoti Primary started Squash in 2016. Players who are interested in the sport are given the opportunity to go down to Amanzimtoti Squash Courts to try out and join the squash team if he/she has potential.

Soccer is offered to all boys and girls in the Junior and Senior Primary. There are various matches for each age group during term 3 and the Tournaments for both boys and girls.

Chess is an extra mural activity, which develops mental abilities such as concentration, critical thinking, abstract reasoning, problem solving and planning.

Chess is offered from Grade 2 -7. The purpose of the chess club is to teach the learners how to play the game. They are both informal and timed games.

The chess team play against our local schools as well as touring teams. The players constantly challenge each other in order to move up the Chess ladder.

The Enviro Club works to promote an increased awareness and understanding of environmental issues. It aims to empower our learners to improve and protect their environment through innovative actions.

In order to achieve some of these goals, there are annual activities such as water awareness, Mini Sass investigations, growing a permaculture garden, recycling workshops and other environmental activities done throughout the course of year.
